Arlington, VA– Today the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced its decision to grant Waste Management’s request for exemption from Electronic Logging Device (ELD) rules. In its decision, the FMCSA said it “analyzed the exemption application and the public comments and has determined that the exemption, subject to the terms and conditions imposed, will likely achieve a level of safety that is equivalent to, or greater than, the level that would be achieved absent such exemption.”

“We are pleased that the FMCSA reached the right conclusion after a careful and thoughtful review of the exemption application and public comments. Waste and recycling companies operate local route service trucks with drivers starting and ending their days at the same location,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith.

National Waste & Recycling Association filed commentsin August as part of an NWRA-led effort on behalf of the entire waste and recycling industry. The association encouraged and coordinated comments in support of Waste Management’s request from member companies including those submitted by Republic Services, Waste Connections, and Homewood Disposal.

The National Waste and Recycling Association represents the private sector waste and recycling services industry. Association members conduct business in all 50 states, and include companies that manage garbage, recycling and medical waste, equipment manufacturers and distributors, and a variety of other service providers.
