The FILA 2018 Education Summit will be an introduction to how government affairs is conducted. By the end of the Summit, FILA members should expect to:

  • Understand the role of government in the waste industry and how working with government can create a stronger economic climate while setting the table for future generations;
  • Understand the importance and differences of federal, state and local government, and how and why your organization can and should be interacting with them;
  • Have the ability to organize and execute briefings that establish the importance of the meeting, hit the key bullet points, and set the expectation on how to move to the next step;
  • Learn from other FILA members about how their companies conduct government affairs.

Tuesday, September 25

Location: Hilton Garden Inn Reagan National Airport

This all-day meeting will feature an introduction to government regulation and policy initiatives in the industry and provide skill-building exercises to help FILA members engage with legislators at the local, state and federal level.

 Kristin will provide tools to form a position on issues. Topics relevant to the industry will be used in the skill-building exercises.

This panel will give members insight into their profession and how they work with government officials and NWRA members.

This day will provide insight from government officials’ viewpoints to help members better understand their audience.

Discounted hotel rooms at the rate of $179 have been reserved and are available two days before and after the event dates. Please call the hotel directly at (703) 892-1050 by September 3, 2018 to get the discounted rate.


The Hotel is quickly and easily accessed by taking the Washington Metro subway from DCA Reagan National Airport to the Crystal City stop. This is only one stop from the airport station and much faster (and cheaper) than a cab. Members can buy a pass at any station with cash or credit card. When boarding at DCA, passengers should take either the blue train towards Largo Town Center or the yellow train toward Fort Totten. The hotel is less than a quarter mile walk from the Crystal City stop.

For those participating in the guest speaker meetings in D.C. on Wednesday, the group will travel by Metro into the city. Leave your luggage at the hotel and pick up after the meetings (participants will be going through security checks on Capitol Hill). Return flights should be scheduled for 5:00 or later.
