Darrell K. Smith is President & Chief Executive Officer of the National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA). Since 2002, Darrell has been active in the public policy arena in Washington, DC. Previous to his current position in the waste industry, he represented the mining, petroleum, and chemical industries. Darrell has a reputation for assisting heavy industry in the promotion of a positive, responsible image.
Under Darrell’s leadership in association roles, his organizations have received two American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Silver Awards, one Gold Award, the prestigious Summit Award, and NWRA was recognized by ASAE as one of 100 associations that will change the world. Darrell was also recognized by DCA Live as a leader demonstrating Exceptional Performance.
Darrell received a Bachelor of Science degree from The Citadel and a Master of Public Health degree in environmental science from the University of South Carolina. He also possesses a Doctorate in Environmental Science and Policy from George Mason University, where his research interests involved the resolution of environmental conflicts. Currently, Darrell is completing a Master of Science degree in leadership from The Citadel. Darrell is a lifetime member of The Association of Citadel Men.
Prior to his public policy career, Darrell worked in the environmental and safety compliance fields for a number of industries including hazardous waste, telecommunications, and electronics. He holds nine professional certifications including Certified Association Executive, Certified Nonprofit Professional, Senior Business Strategy Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, and Sustainability Excellence Associate.
Darrell is originally from South Carolina and resides in Washington, DC.
