NWRA Receives ASAE’s “The Power of A” Gold Award for Advocacy

Association Recognized for its Hours-of-Service/Electronic Logging Device Exemption

Arlington, VA – The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) has received the American Society of Association Executives’ (ASAE) 2020 “The Power of A” Gold Award for Advocacy. NWRA was recognized for its historic Hours-of-Service exemption from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The exemption, which is limited to NWRA members, eliminates the need for them to use electronic logging devices (ELDs) and saves them an estimated $120 million over two years.

“This award recognizes the hard work of our member companies and advocacy team,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “ELDs are actually counterproductive for our industry and increase risks associated with distracted driving. We are honored that ASAE has taken note of this exemption and the benefits that it brings for members of our association.”

NWRA is only the third association to receive a year-round FMCSA Hours-of-Service exemption for its industry, but is the first where this exemption is limited only to members of the association.

NWRA was awarded ASAE’s 2019 “The Power of A” Silver Award for its “Slow Down to Get Around” legislative advocacy campaign.
