Current Initiatives

The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) advances safety and industry
progress by collecting data and coordinating strategic projects. By partnering with
stakeholders, agencies, researchers, and community groups, NWRA effectively tackles
challenges and promotes improvements. These collaborations, supported by data-
driven decisions, help members share expertise, access resources, and further the
waste and recycling sector’s growth and safety. Some of our projects and initiatives are
discussed here.

Slow Down to Get Around

Slow Down to Get Around (SDTGA) is the National Waste & Recycling Association’s national safety campaign that reminds motorists to drive more carefully when near waste and recycling collection vehicles. Being struck by motorists is a leading cause of death for waste and recycling collection employees, and with proper awareness, is completely preventable.

SDTGA was developed by the Association with Rumpke Waste & Recycling, an Association member in the Midwest, and McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing, an Association member that manufactures garbage trucks. The program was created following two tragic incident that resulted in the death of one Rumpke employee and severe injuries to a second. Both accidents were due to careless driving by motorists.
