Remembering Eugene J. “Gene” Wingerter

A Foundational Leader in the Waste and Recycling Industry

The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) honors the life and legacy of Eugene J. “Gene” Wingerter, a pioneering leader whose vision and dedication helped shape the modern waste and recycling industry. Gene passed away on January 5, 2026.

Gene was among the most influential figures in the history of the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA), the predecessor organization to today’s NWRA. He began his service to the industry in 1970 as NSWMA’s first Technical Director and was appointed Executive Director in 1973, a position he held for more than two decades.

During his tenure, Gene transformed NSWMA from a small, fragmented organization into a unified national voice representing companies across the full spectrum of waste and environmental services. His leadership brought structure, credibility, and cohesion to an evolving industry at a critical moment in its growth.

Widely regarded as the “Father of NSWMA,” Gene oversaw the expansion of the association to 30 state chapters and multiple specialized institutes. Under his guidance, both the service and equipment sectors were strengthened, and the association became a trusted authority on waste management policy, safety, technology, and business practices. These efforts laid the groundwork for what would ultimately become the National Waste & Recycling Association.

In 2005, Gene was inducted into the Environmental Industry Hall of Fame, the former name of what is now recognized as the NWRA Hall of Fame, honoring more than 25 years of contributions that advanced the industry’s professionalism, credibility, and public standing.

Following his tenure with NSWMA, Gene continued to serve the waste and recycling industry as a consultant and executive, including leadership roles with Wingerter & Associates and Threat Response Technologies. Throughout his career, he remained a trusted advisor, mentor, and respected voice to many across the industry.

“Gene’s legacy is woven into every advancement our industry has made over the past 50 years,” said Michael E. Hoffman, President and CEO of NWRA. “His clarity of purpose, formidable leadership, and unwavering dedication helped build the foundation we stand on today. We are honored to recognize his extraordinary life of service.”

NWRA extends its deepest condolences to Gene’s family, friends, and the many colleagues whose lives and careers were shaped by his leadership.
