NWRA Congratulates Secretary Regan on EPA Administrator Nomination
Arlington, VA – The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) sent a letter to Michael Regan, secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality for North Carolina, following the announcement that President-elect Joe Biden would nominate him to serve as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
“NWRA extends its congratulations to Secretary Regan. He is already well-versed in issues related to the environment and understands the importance of proper waste management,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “We look forward to working with the new administration on issues of mutual interest.”
The waste industry is a highly regulated industry requiring significant investments to maintain compliance with existing regulations. Over the years, the industry had reined in methane emissions from landfills and rapidly transitioned to lower impact fuels for its collection vehicles.
Looking to the future, the industry continues to focus on proper recycling. To assist with this effort, the EPA recently released its draft National Recycling Strategy, which NWRA filed comments on. The draft strategy identifies objectives and actions needed to create a stronger and more vibrant recycling system.
NWRA represents the private sector waste and recycling industry that is necessary to maintaining our quality of life by protecting public health and the environment. The delivery of waste and recycling services impacts everyone on a daily basis—whether they are at home, at work or anywhere else. It impacts people at every stage of life, from the youngest to the oldest. As such, NWRA members are classified as essential by the Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency.
