NWRA FILA Board Elects New Members for 2021
Arlington, VA – The National Waste & Recycling Association’s (NWRA) Future Industry Leaders Alliance (FILA) Board recently held a meeting to select the 2021 board, review FILA’s operating guidelines and discuss this year’s agenda.
FILA is a member-directed association dedicated to promoting the development and advancement of the next generation of the waste and recycling industry’s leaders. Members engage in meaningful education, professional development, networking and mentoring opportunities to advance their careers in the industry.
FILA members receive professional development opportunities in all areas of leadership, including but not limited to finance and accounting, human resources, operations, safety, public policy and advocacy and business development. Members participate in facility tours, global exchanges and networking to learn about emerging technologies and trends in the industry. FILA strongly encourages its members to participate in FILA-sponsored volunteer opportunities and charitable giving in an effort to give back to both the industry and the communities in which our member organizations serve.
“FILA is an important part of NWRA’s effort to recruit the industry’s next generation of leaders and to provide professional development opportunities for those seeking senior leadership and executive roles,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “NWRA welcomes the 2021 FILA board members and looks forward to working with them on new ideas and goals.”
The board will continue to meet monthly to discuss this year’s agenda, which will feature participation in WasteExpo 2021, participation in NWRA’s Executive Leadership Roundtable (ELRT), the FILA Fall Summit (restrictions permitting), new marketing, social media and membership efforts and more.
2021 Board
Co-Chair: Sean Mason, Sierra Container Group
Partner and Vice President with Sierra Container Group, Sean Mason is a 12-year environmental cart sales veteran and works with national haulers, regional haulers and independents all over the country. His direct focus is delivering the highest quality product in the industry coupled with unmatched, best-in-class customer service. Sean’s relentless drive and ability to build strong industry relationships has been instrumental in the growth of Sierra Container Group over the past five years. He tries to live his life based on the quote, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel.” A fitness enthusiast, Sean lives in Georgia with his wife Jessica and two boys Jackson, 4, and Jordan, 1.
“Being a member of the FILA Board provides a unique opportunity to give back to the industry that gives so much to me on both a professional and personal level,” said Sean. “I look forward to continuing to contribute to our growth as an organization and increasing the awareness of the mission of FILA across the waste and recycling industry.”
Co-Chair: Liza Casella, Casella Waste Systems
Liza Casella currently serves in the role of senior director, business development and strategy where she is responsible for driving Casella’s organic growth and development strategy. She plays a leading role in organizing and executing myriad business initiatives such as government and legislative affairs, culture and awareness, leadership development and strategic partnerships and alliances. Liza brings new and youthful perspective and next-generation culture to the solid waste and resource management industry and is a champion of change and leading complex projects that achieve business objectives. She formerly served on the board of MassRecycle and was the volunteer assistant field hockey coach at Harvard University. Liza is a member of NWRA’s Massachusetts Chapter Steering Committee, NWRA Women’s Council, serves as board co-chair of NWRA’s Future Industry Leaders Alliance and a Waste360 40 Under 40 award recipient. She has a BA in Psychology from Wake Forest University.
“FILA truly is a special group with a phenomenal mix of great people and inspiring talent. It has been an honor being a part of this incredible organization, and I feel lucky to have both grown professionally and made lifelong friends as a direct result of my involvement with FILA,” said Liza. “I look forward to continuing to prop-up the talent of the next generation, attract more professionals to the waste and recycling industry and continue to educate the general public about the essential work our member companies do for our communities and society.”
Treasurer: Travis Timmerman, Mack Trucks
Travis Timmerman has been in the solid waste industry for 10 years. He began his career in solid waste with McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing where he held various positions in procurement, product management and sales. Travis joined Mack Trucks in 2014 and is now in his seventh year. Today, he is the director of vocational sales in the national accounts organization where he oversees sales to the largest haulers in the solid waste industry.
“I have been an active FILA member for the last three years and have enjoyed the professional networking this has provided me as well as the continued growth opportunities for my personal career,” said Travis. “Being part of the FILA Board will give me the opportunity to further the growth of this organization as we look to build the future leaders of the solid waste industry. I was introduced to FILA through a colleague but knew nothing of the organization prior, so as a board member, one of my biggest goals will be to drive new membership as well as engagement of current members.”
Secretary: Jaclyn Carrigan, Waste Connections of Canada
Jaclyn Carrigan is the communications manager at Waste Connections in Toronto, Canada, a position she has held since 2016 when Waste Connections Inc. acquired Progressive Waste Solutions. Prior to the acquisition, she first began her career in corporate communications in the waste industry at BFI Canada and IESI as an intern and escalated into multiple roles throughout the company’s evolution into Progressive Waste Solutions. She works mostly as a project manager, supporting the internal and external communications and marketing needs of multiple departments across the Canadian Region. Jaclyn holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto and a post-graduate diploma from Centennial College in Public Relations and Corporate Communications.
“With over 13 years of work experience in the waste industry across both the U.S. and Canada, this has allowed me to recognize the clear advantage FILA can bring to young, motivated individuals, such as education, training and networking opportunities,” said Jaclyn. “I’m proud to be a FILA Board member to help shape these opportunities and build strong leadership for the industry in the future.”
Marketing & Membership: Eric Voss, Big Truck Rental
Eric Voss joined Big Truck Rental in January 2019 in the role of director of national accounts, responsible for developing and executing the sales and marketing strategy in the U.S. and Canada. In August 2020, he was promoted to vice president of sales at Big Truck Rental and responsible for all sales in the U.S. and Canada. Eric began his career in the environmental industry in 2009 with Rehrig Pacific Company. He has a passion for the industry, bringing out the best in those around him and understanding how to match people with solutions to achieve a common goal. In addition to FILA, Eric serves the National Waste & Recycling Association on the Education Committee for the annual WasteExpo trade show. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri.
“I have been active with FILA for over five years,” said Eric. “It is a pleasure to serve on the board. What I enjoy the most about FILA are the people, ideas, conversations and actions that take place when we come together. There is a positive energy from this group that fuels the industry forward.”
Member At-Large: Carey Calabrese, GFL Environmental
Carey Calabrese has been in the solid waste industry for nine years, holding various positions throughout his career in finance and operations. Over the last four years, he has served as the Missouri north district manager at GFL Environmental (formerly WCA Waste Corporation) where he oversees nine locations across the state of Missouri.
“I have been an active FILA member for most of my nine-year career in the solid waste industry,” said Carey. “What I am most looking forward to as a FILA Board member is helping the organization grow and helping both current and future members take advantage of all the networking and career development opportunities FILA has to offer.”
Member At-Large: Jocelynn Clindaniel, Municipal Equipment, Inc.
Jocelynn Clindaniel, regional territory manager and director of marketing for Municipal Equipment, Inc., has been in the waste industry for seven years and a member of FILA for five years.
“I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with both haulers and manufacturers within the waste and recycling industry,” said Jocelynn. “With this point of view, I can assist with recruitment of qualified members to help not only grow FILA but to increase member networking. This allows us to learn from each other, work together and evolve the industry.”
Member At-Large: Josh Mann, Waste Management
As Public Sector Solutions Manager for Waste Management, Josh Mann develops and manages municipal waste and recycling programs in Southern California. Collectively, these programs support the needs of 150,000 individual customers and more than 20 million services provided each year. He is currently focused on assisting communities with expanding organic waste diversion programs and rethinking how we educate customers about recycling and contamination. Josh is also committed to the future of the industry and his community, serving as member at-large of FILA, a member of Kern County’s Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee and as a board member for his local Boys & Girls Club.
“The benefits of FILA are undeniable,” said Josh. “Since joining, I have met some incredible people, enhanced my leadership skills, broadened my industry knowledge and had a good time along the way.”
