NWRA Commends House Subcommittee for Holding Hearing to Address Recycling Issues
Association Calls on Congress to Pass Legislation to Improve Domestic Recycling Infrastructure
Arlington, VA – The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) commends the House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change for holding today’s hearing on America’s recycling system. In a letter to the committee leadership, NWRA endorsed the passage of the Recycling Infrastructure and Accessibility Act (H.R. 8183) and the Recycling and Composting Accountability Act (H.R. 8059). These bipartisan bills would help increase access to recycling infrastructure in rural areas and collect data useful for industry members to make informed business decisions.
“NWRA fully supports the bipartisan legislation proposed by Reps. David McKinley and Mikie Sherrill to address the issues of improving rural recycling accessibility,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “Ensuring that all Americans have access to recycling provides equity and supports sustainable materials management across the nation.
“Likewise, the Recycling and Composting Accountability Act put forward by Reps. Joe Neguse, Tim Burchett and Bill Foster will gather data that NWRA members can use to improve their businesses and the services that they provide.”
Companion bills were approved by the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee in April and are waiting floor votes by the full Senate.
In February, then-NWRA Chairman Ben Harvey testified before the Senate EPW Committee at its hearing to examine these legislative proposals to improve domestic recycling and composting programs, particularly in rural areas. NWRA has been meeting with and providing assistance to House and Senate staff as these bills were being drafted and making their way through committees. NWRA will continue to actively support these pieces of legislation to ensure that they become law.
