NWRA State Update: Florida Legislative Session Highlights

In this NWRA State Update, the NWRA Florida chapter provides some highlights from the current Florida legislative session.

The Florida legislature adjourned Sine Die on Friday, April 30. To date, the 2021 regular session has included:

  • 3,140 bills and proposed committee bills filed
  • 2,632 amendments filed
  • 3,788 votes taken
  • 39 floor sessions
  • 275 bills passed both chambers

The NWRA Florida chapter had a great year passing legislation benefiting the waste and recycling industry. Some of the successes in Florida include:

  • Passed legislation to address the displacement of private waste companies.
  • Passed legislation that provided a definition for storm-generated yard waste.
  • Passed legislation that limited civil liabilities for damages relating to COVID-19.
  • Passed legislation that included landfill gas in the renewable natural gas definition.
  • Passed legislation that prohibited local governments from restricting or prohibiting types of fuels such as natural gas.
