NWRA Announces 2020 Industry Leadership Awards

Arlington, VA – The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) announced its 2020 membership award recipients across three categories for their contributions in support of the waste and recycling industry and the Association.

The 2020 honorees are: Services Member of the Year Award: Bruce Schmucker, Ecotech Waste Logistics; Suppliers Member of the Year Award: Tony Romano, 3rd Eye; Services Chapter Leadership Award: Scott Hutchings, Waste Management; Services Distinguished Service Awards: John Wohlrab, Waste Management, and Frank Hillegonds, Homewood Disposal; and Suppliers Distinguished Service Award: Pat Carroll, Environmental Solutions Group.

“Our member companies and their employees are the strength of NWRA. Without these individuals’ leadership and contribution, NWRA would not be the leading association in the waste industry. I congratulate them on their achievement,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith.

About the Awards

Members of the Year are selected based upon extraordinary service to the mission and goals of NWRA and the industry over the past year.

Chapter Leadership awards are presented to members whose contributions to a chapter were particularly meritorious.

Distinguished Service awards are presented to longstanding members of NWRA who render service in pursuit of its mission and goals. It recognizes the highest spirit of volunteerism, personal integrity, professionalism and performance in an honorable and ethical manner.

About the Winners

Services Member of the Year

Bruce Schmucker, Ecotech Waste Logistics, Kentucky

Bruce is actively engaged in many legislative and regulatory priorities for the Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky chapters. He has helped the chapters respond to proposed regulations that resulted in fair rules for the waste and recycling industry, including post-closure care rules for landfills in Ohio.

Suppliers Member of the Year

Tony Romano, 3rd Eye

Tony was recognized for his commitment and leadership. He has been an active member of the Association, always ready to share his wisdom to make NWRA a stronger organization.

Chapter Leadership

Scott Hutchings, Waste Management, Colorado

Scott has been instrumental in establishing our chapter in Colorado. Leveraging his experience in Colorado politics, Scott has helped ensure the waste and recycling industry in Colorado has a strong voice

Services Distinguished Service

John Wohlrab, Waste Management, New Jersey

John is an active member of NWRA’s New Jersey chapter. He helped pass important bills like food waste legislation and helped fight against legislation that would harm the waste and recycling industry. John continues to be an engaged industry professional in the chapter’s advocacy efforts.

Frank Hillegonds, Homewood Disposal, Illinois

Frank has been in the waste and recycling industry for more than 25 years, spanning two companies. Frank has chaired the Illinois Chapter Legislative committee and held several other leadership positions within the chapter, including currently serving as chair of the Golf Committee.

Suppliers Distinguished Service

Pat Carroll,Environmental Solutions Group

Pat has been an active and longstanding member of NWRA He has served the organization and the industry in a variety of capacities. Pat’s contributions have helped make NWRA a stronger voice for the waste and recycling industry.
