NWRA IL Chapter Testifies Against Proposed Bottle Bill

NWRA IL Chapter Testifies Against Proposed Bottle Bill

Arlington, VA – The Illinois chapter of the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) testified in opposition to legislation that would create the State Beverage Container Recycling Refunds Act. The bill would establish a container recycling redemption refund program.

“Studies have shown that bottle bills do not achieve the goals its supporters expect,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “We appreciate the opportunity to express our concerns to state legislators in Illinois.”

NWRA chapter member John Pausma from Homewood Disposal outlined how a bottle bill will trigger increased costs for residential recycling programs as the most valuable materials will be removed from the recycling bin. The legislation is not expected to move this session.
