NWRA Urges Congress to Oppose the “Build Back Better” Reconciliation Bill as Currently Drafted

Arlington, VA – The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) joined with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other associations on a letter urging Congress to address the headwinds that are stifling our nation’s economic growth and hurting businesses. The “Build Back Better” reconciliation bill now before Congress does not solve the problems of the worker shortage crisis, supply chain disruption and the highest inflation in a generation but instead seeks to put in place policies that will worsen each of these.

“We call on Congress to work together to solve these massive challenges facing our business community,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “The proposed tax increases and anti-energy provisions in the bill will harm the recovery and make it more difficult for America’s businesses to compete globally. We call upon Congress to oppose the reconciliation bill as currently drafted.”

The proposed legislation would also overturn nearly 90 years of labor law and tilt the playing field in favor of unions by threatening employers of all sizes with bankruptcy-inducing civil penalties that do not exist in current law. Finally, because of various budget gimmicks, including sunsetting new programs in some cases after only one year, the true cost of the proposed bill is significantly higher than the nearly $2 trillion advertised.
